Producers’ Choice

This is a hard choice, but if I had to narrow it down to two or three, I would say my favorites are Lady Justice, (episodes #22, 23, and 24) and A View from the Mountaintop (episode #32).

Lady Justice is a three-part series about Constance Baker Motley told by her son, Joel Motley III. The real intriguing part about this episode is that it told the story of a legal giant experienced and lived through the eyes of her then, 10-year-old son.

A View from the Mountaintop features, W. J. Michael “Mike” Cody, one of the lawyers representing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 3 and 4, 1968. His detailed recollection of the legal work done over that two-day period - which proved to be fateful in American history - is spellbinding and riveting and will have you on the edge of your seat.

It was indeed a memorable experience to interview these two eyewitnesses to history.

Episodes 9, “The Back of the Bus Takes a Front Seat” and 27, “Noah Parden-Jailhouse Rock” are two of my favorites.

The Back of the Bus tells how diligent, patient, and strategic the movement was. People weren’t victims who needed a savior. They controlled the chess board.

And Jailhouse Rock was like a movie. Noah Parden’s bravery taking on this case against all odds and Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlen’s role is an example of how the arc bends toward justice.

The lasting change wrought by the civil rights movement cannot be rightly counted without telling the story of the lawyers and judges who ensured the movement of the 50’s and 60’s became law for the ages. Hidden Legal Figures tells their stories…lest we forget how essential the law and its stewards are to the betterment of society and its citizens.
